Elbows on the table: Dos and Don’ts

Elbows on the table are not considering bad manners while having a conversation between courses or after you finish eating. As long as no food is in front of you, you may put your elbows on the table.

When is it acceptable to keep your elbows on the table?

Here are a few situations when elbows are acceptable on the table:

  • having a conversation with a friend over a cup of tea
  • reading while having a cup of coffee at your favorite shop
  • working on the computer
  • if the other person leans forward with his elbows on the tabletop, then you can let loose and be relaxed
  • allow your child to lean on the elbow in casual settings: playing a game or watching a movie.

Here are situations when elbows are not allowed on the table.

Keep off your elbows when food is on the table. It’s an absolute No elbows on the dinner table in casual and formal settings.

There are two significant reasons why elbows are not allowed while you are at the table eating.:

  1. Accidents can happen quickly
    Putting your weight on your elbows may tip over the table and risk to send down the food and cutlery.
    Knowing that these accidents can happen, keep your elbows off the table and teach your kids to do as well.
  2. Keep off elbows to have an upright posture
    Posture is essential, the taller you sit, the more people will pay attention to you, and you will appear more confident and impose authority.
